Dorin Popescu, dean of the Chisinau Bar Association, has been elected as the new president of the Moldovan Bar Association.
A total 1,147 lawyers participated in electing the MBA president and 688 voted for Popescu. His contestants, Iurie Mărgineanu, Mihail Gafton, and Ion Dron got 204, 129 and 126 votes, respectively.
Popescu stated earlier that if elected he would focus on improving public trust in lawyers. Another priority is to work with the authorities to make sure that the profession is respected and that lawyers don’t face intimidation and prosecution for doing their job. Popescu also wants to improve the training process of lawyers, consolidate professional ethics, and develop clearer disciplinary rules.
Dorin Popescu has been a practicing lawyer since 1996, being in parallel a lecturer at the Moldova State Universtity. He has served as dean Chisinau Bar Association since 2018, being its interim dean during 2013-2015.
