Current mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca on June 25 commemorated the former mayor of the capital city Carol Schmidt by laying flowers at his bust placed in front of the National Philharmonic, IPN reports.

“Today it is 169 years of Karol Schmidt’s birth. It is for the first time that the former mayor is being commemorated. His grave was devastated, while since last May, when this bust was unveiled, nobody laid flowers here,” said the Liberal Party’s candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau.

Dorin Chirtoaca refused to make statements for the journalists and to answer their questions. “It is a wordless event as I don’t want the birthday of the best mayor of Chisinau to turn into a cheap show. In this election campaign, the words turn into dirt and lie,” he argued.

Carol Schmidt (25.6. 1846, Balti — 9.4.1928, Chisinau) had managed Chisinau for 25 years. He is known for radically changing the aspect of Chisinau. From a provincial town with underdeveloped economic relations, he turned Chisinau into a modern city for that period.
