Dorin Chirtoaca demands prohibiting barbecues at cemeteries
“Low Sunday becomes a wild competition. Value became a non-value, while the people compete in giving as many presents in memory of the dead as possible. I saw women in evening dresses and short skirts. This is degradation,” Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said in the April 24 meeting of City Hall officials. He stressed that the barbecues at cemeteries should be banned in the future, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The head of the Funeral Services Company Vadim Cojusneanu said that the people who went to cemeteries abused alcohol. Some were aggressive, even towards the police. “I saw personally how police officers were mistreated and spat on. Many persons parked their vehicles right in front of the cemetery,” he stated.
As many as 60 tonnes of garbage were collected from Saint Lazarus Cemetery during two days. Vadim Cojusneanu said there were transport-related problems as the parking lots were small, the roads narrow and many people came to the cemetery by personal cars.
Municipal police chief Silviu Musuc said that special parking lots for private units of transport were set up on Socoleni street, about 1 kilometer from Saint Lazarus Cemetery. As it was rather far, the people did not leave their cars there.
The mayor instructed the divisions in charge to formulate solutions by next week. He proposed holding a large service in memory of all the departed so that the priests do not have to go to every grave to bless it.
