The current mayor of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoca does not rule out the possibility that the level of corruption at the Chisinau City Hall has increased during his two terms in office. Chirtoaca made such a statement in the program “Interpol” on TV7 channel, IPN reports.
“Corruption in the period may have increased. The phenomenon of corruption is a general one and is alike all over the country. It is not the duty of a mayor to fight corruption. Anyway, I dismissed 30 functionaries for acts of corruption, but none of them was jailed. Some of these were even reinstated in their posts by the court. There is no state institution where 30 employees would have been fired for acts of corruption,” stated Chirtoaca, who is running for a new term in office.
He refuted the press reports that he promoted corrupt persons to key posts and expressed his dissatisfaction with the inconvenient questions put on the issue. “Particular emissaries make effort to make someone corrupt so that another candidate appeared afterward, who would pretend to be clean and clear and would profit from the situation. It would be much pleasant for me to stay now on the top of a hill with a lady there,” said Chirtoaca.
He noted he wants a new term of mayor so that Moldova continues its European course. “I personally do not need another term. I form part of a current that includes a lot of people. Moldova must continue on its European path and the pro-European forces must win in Chisinau. What is happening now in Chisinau will happen tomorrow in Moldova. If the pro-European forces win the mayoralty in Chisinau, the pro-European parties will win the future parliamentary elections,” said the candidate.
