The candidate of the Liberal Party for Chisinau Mayor General, Dorin Chirtoaca, and his former rivals, Leonid Bujor and Valdimir Filat, have met at the Press Club on June 7 to discuss the elections that will take place on June 17 and, in particular, the support provided to Chirtoaca and the potential cooperation in the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC). Bujor said that the Moldova Noastra Alliance Party had stated immediately after the election that under no conditions would it support communist candidates neither in the Chisinau mayoral race nor in the second round voting across the country. AMN pleads for a non-communist alliance in the CMC, which would include all the representatives of such parties, while the greatest degree of responsibility will be delegated to Chirtoaca. The extent to which AMN will support the liberal candidate depends solely on himself and the party he represents, said Bujor, also mentioning that he will not engage in discussions for the sake of interests of positions. Vladimir Filat also underlined that he will not support Iordan under any circumstances, mentioning that the responsibility stays with Chirtoaca. “I am waiting for further proposals from his team. The fight against communism which was declared by PL must be taken to an end, but in order to succeed, a complex consensus is needed”. Filat said that he is prepared to support Chirtoaca with all the available forces, but is waiting for further proposals with regards to ideas, future projects and plans and not with reference to positions. Chirtoaca stated that it is still too early to discuss how “the crops will be distributed, when they have not been sown yet.” It is obvious that PL, which has the second greatest faction in CMC, will cooperate with all the parties, excluding the communists. So far many alliances have been created and there is a risk that a “4th of April” will occur in CMC, too. “I am not sure why these talks are necessary, when the most significant objective is the June 17 victory, while all other issues can be discussed the next day”, said the former candidate. Political analyst Mihai Godea stated that a potential victory of the ruling party in Chisinau will delay the process of change of power in the future, while the whole responsibility for such a process will be thrown onto Dorin Chirtoaca, exactly due to the post-June 3 hermetic nature of PL. The PL candidate and the party must understand that they must become the pivot in ensuring the victory against the communists in Chisinau. The fears of this party are understandable, but the political process supposes negotiations and discussions. Otherwise, on June 18, the results will indicate yet again towards “a Moldovan, non-progressive and unchanged set of mind”, the expert said. Other competitors were invited to the Press Club, including Veaceslav Iordan, but they refused to attend the discussions.
