Dorian Istratii: We need to discuss possibility of joining NATO in society

The North Atlantic Alliance will offer the Republic of Moldova a security umbrella and the subject of entry into NATO should be discussed in society, said PAS MP Dorian Istratii. According to him, the status of neutrality stipulated in the Constitution does not protect the Republic of Moldova from eventual attacks. For his part, the MP of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists Adrian Albu said that the Republic of Moldova should maintain the neutrality status and any amendment of the Constitution should take place only as a result of a referendum, IPN reports.

The MP of the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity Dorian Istratii said that the Russian Federation ignores the status of neutrality of the Republic of Moldova as it keeps its army and munitions on the left side of the Nistru River, while Russian missiles violate the Moldovan airspace.

“Society should realize that neutrality does not defend us and rockets anyway enter our airspace. We should seriously discuss in society other protection ways, such as the entry into NATO. Sweden is a country that hasn’t been at war since 1814, but it decided to apply to join NATO immediately after this war started. The Swedes are a nation that avoided wars, but they realize very well that the NATO umbrella can defend them. This does not happen in our case when we have tree status of neutrality enshrined in the Constitution. The country’s sovereignty is anyway violated by the Russian Federation, which should have withdrawn its military presence back in 1999, when the Declaration of Istanbul was signed. We also see the Russian Federation’s reaction to the modification of the article concerning the Romanian language. Russia is used to keep the countries of the former USSR hostage,” Dorian Istratii stated in the program “Good Evening” on the public TV channel.

The parliamentary opposition considers Moldova’s eventual entry into a military bloc will be a mistake. Socialist Adrian Albu said that given the war that is taking place in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova should refrain from statements in favor of a belligerent side and should take only humanitarian actions.

“The Republic of Moldova should enjoy neutrality and we should help our neighbors in this conflict. All the districts that are managed by Socialists are situated mainly on the border and we had a large inflow of refugees. The government told then the LPAs to intervene and they will be refunded the costs later from the budget. The district heads told us that they haven’t been paid money back so far. In the Republic of Moldova, when there are constitutional problems, the referendum mechanism should be applied, as in the case of the amendment of Article 13 of the Constitution, which refers to the official language,” stated BCS MP Adrian Albu.

The Ministry of Defense of Moldova denied the reports that Moldova’s airspace on Thursday morning was crossed by cruise missiles launched from the Black Sea on Ukrainian localities. According to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, 81 Russian rockets yesterday hit Ukraine’s Odessa, Kharkov, Zaporozhe, Kyiv, Lvov, Ivano-Frankovsk, Zhytomyr, Vinnitsa regions and these targeted critical infrastructure and residential buildings.
