A man, 54, died after being swept away by flood waters yesterday in Scăieni village, Dondușeni district. This was confirmed to IPN by the village mayor Lucian Racu.
The man and two fellow villagers were moving a herd of cattle back to the village on Tuesday evening when they had to cross a stream over a small bridge. Suddenly the man slipped and fell into the stream immensely swollen by flood waters and taken away a hundred of meters or so into the Raut River. His colleagues were unable to help.
General Police Inspectorate spokesperson Mariana Bețivu told IPN the body was found entangled in the roots of a tree on the brink of the Raut.
Abundant rainfall in the last few days caused damage in many parts of the country, affecting crops, local roads, houses and basements. A ‘code yellow’ storm warning remains in place until midnight.
