Donald Tusk: Enlargement and cooperation among EU countries is in the interest of all of Europe

Moldova has the right to tell Europe that the enlargement and close cooperation among the EU countries is in the interest of the whole of Europe, not only of Moldova, stated Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during a joint press conference in Chisinau with his Moldovan counterpart Dorin Recean.

According to Donald Tusk, Moldova is a small but proud country and has every right to tell Europe that the enlargement and close cooperation among EU countries is in the interest of all of Europe, not just its own. At the same time, according to the official, Moldova has achieved a lot on the way to the EU, having much worse conditions than other states.

“No one can give lessons to either Moldova or Poland. Europe can learn from these countries how to proceed in this special region,” said Donald Tusk. The prime Minister of Poland assured the citizens that Poland will intensively support and cooperate with Moldova in the process of accession to the EU.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean declared that during the discussions with his counterpart from Poland, they focused on European integration, but also on capitalizing on the bilateral economic potential. In his opinion, Poland is an example to follow, as it has built an excellent capacity to absorb European funds in the accession process. This year Poland celebrates 20 years since joining the EU.

Dorin Recean noted that Moldova is determined to achieve its national goal and build enough by 2030 to be ready to join the EU. From Poland he will learn to negotiate intelligently and to benefit together with the EU member states in the accession process.

In the context of the upcoming presidency of the EU Council, Dorin Recean said that he is counting on Poland’s continued support. At the same time, Moldova is ready to be constructively involved in the dialogues hosted by Poland in 2025 and the economic infrastructure projects within the Three Seas Initiative.

The objective of the two states, the prime minister says, is to increase trade and expand the access of Moldovan products to the Polish market. In 2023, Poland was the second largest importer of Moldovan wines and Recean believes there is great potential for other products as well.
