The Constitutional Court will not allow interference in its work on the part of politicians or other persons, said the Court’s new president Domnica Manole. In a press briefing held one day after her appointment as CC president, the judge assured that the Court fulfills its duties to guarantee the supremacy of the Constitution and does not tolerate interference in its work, IPN reports.
“The discussion between the two state officials, which cast doubt on the independence of the Constitutional Court and its judges and sensitized public opinion, could not remain unnoticed by the CC judges. As a result, the judges adopted the two CC decisions by which the former president was given a vote of no confidence and a new president was elected,” said Domnica Manole, referring to the discussion between President Igor Dodon and Vladimir Țurcan, who served then as president of the CC.
According to her, the new post to which she was elected places on her special obligations and responsibilities that she will make effort to honor. “I call on the persons from the state administration, the public authorities, political parties to abandon the noble intentions to telephone, to recommend solutions or to get firsthand information. This kind of conversations can undermine the authority of the Constitutional Court and judges,” stated the incumbent president.
Domnica Manole noted that any discussion about the examined cases is inadmissible. The CC is transparent in its activity and the cases are examined in strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution, in the spirit of democracy and the rule of law.
Judge Domnica Manole was elected president of the Constitutional Court on April 23 following the dismissal of Vladimir Țurcan.
A wave of criticism appeared in society after it became known that President Igor Dodon and the then CC president Vladimir Țurcan had a discussion on a case examined by the Court – the law for which the Government assumed responsibility. A number of NGOs expressed their concern about the fact that the CC president tried to justify himself to the Head of State and stated his opinion on the examined case before the Court passed its judgment. According to the NGOs, such behavior seriously spoils the image of the Constitutional Court.
