The European integration is the project that will benefit the future generations, and the political parties in the Republic of Moldova must join forces and take this historic opportunity, said Deputy Speaker of Parliament Doina German, who called on all the pro-European parties in Moldova to support the referendum on the country’s accession to the EU. For his part, PSDE chairman Ion Sula said the citizens chose the accession to the EU in the last three elections, when they voted for pro-European parties, IPN reports.
Deputy Speaker Doina German noted that Moldova has a historic chance to integrate quickly into the European Union, and the “pro” vote in the autumn referendum will confirm the people’s desire to be part of the European community. The citizens’ desideratum to join the EU will be enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova.
“We have never said that PAS is the only party that can represent the country’s European path. It’s ok for political parties not to like PAS. It’s ok for parties to criticize us and we even encourage them to come with constructive criticism. But it is not good to put everything in one pot - the PAS, the referendum, the European integration - because this is against the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Our call is to unite around this country project, because it is not Doina German’s, PAS’ or Parliament’s project. It is the project of the future generations. Now we have this historic opportunity, just like when we signed the application for EU membership. It’s a window of opportunity that we, as responsible politicians, are obliged to take,” Doina German stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
The leader of the European Social Democratic Party (PSDE) Ion Sula said that the PAS government, although it insists on the idea of joining the EU, made a local pact with Igor Dodon’s Socialists.
“As a pro-European political party, we will go to the citizens and persuade them that we must support this referendum, but there are risks. In the last three elections, 60% of the citizens voted for pro-European parties. At the local level, coalitions that are not pro-European were created because the ruling party preferred to have coalitions at district level with the Socialists, those who are pro-Russian, pro-Moscow, pro-Putin and very far from the integration into the EU. How shall we explain this to the citizens? In district X, the people voted for European parties in a proportion of more than 60%, but the local government is represented by Socialists, whom PAS criticizes for travelling to Moscow,” stated Ion Sula.
The national referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union could take place simultaneously with the presidential election. According to the PAS government, both of the electoral exercises could be held in October.
