Dodon urges Democrats, Communists to dismiss education minister

Socialist leader Igor Dodon is urging the Democrat and Communist lawmakers to join his group in filing a motion to discharge Education Minister Mihai Sleahtitchi for his decision to rename the discipline of history in schools. “We have stated on several occasions in Parliament that the ordinance to change the name of the history courses contradicts common sense, and we have stated that if the minister doesn't revoke this ordinance, we will ask for his dismissal. In this respect, we will ask the support of the Democrat and Communist lawmakers, because they have expressed themselves against this decision as well”, said Dodon, whose group needs at least 12 votes in addition to their 3 for a required minimum of 15 votes to file a motion. Dodon noted that the Socialists' youth wing, the Young Guard, conducted a poll which showed that over 70 percent of responders thought that the discipline should be named Moldova's History. On March 7, Education Minister Mihai Sleahtitchi issued an ordinance changing the name of the courses from History to the History of Romanians and World History. The ordinance was based on a decision reached by a group of 25 history experts. Under the ordinance, starting on September 1, 55% of the history courses will be topics from the history of Romanians, 40% from world history, and 5% from local history.
