Shortly after Speaker Andrian Candu announced that the Moldovan authorities were asking the UN General Assembly to discuss the withdrawal of foreign troops from Moldova’s territory at its the upcoming session, Igor Dodon reacted by calling the request “a useless PR move”.
“Instead of showing off before their custodians and puppet-masters in the West, we recommend the Government to better focus on concrete steps for building confidence between Chisinau and Tiraspol, on solutions to current problems on both banks of the Nistru, and on how to resume the negotiations in the 5+2 format”, the president wrote on his Facebook account.
Igor Dodon says the issue of the peacekeeping mission, which he thinks has been successful throughout its 25 years of existence and should continue to exist, must be discussed separately from issue of the military base, whose withdrawal will be possible once the Transnistrian issue is settled.
Earlier today Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu announced that the Moldovan authorities have asked the United Nations to include the withdrawal of foreign troops from Moldovan territory on the agenda of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly opening on September 12.
