Specialists of the National Public Health Agency warn that a disease common to human and animals, mainly rodents, called leptospirosis appears in the warm period of the year alongside acute diarrheal diseases. The disease is among the most spread ones in Moldova, especially in the northern part of the country. Three cases of leptospirosis have been recorded so far this year, in Drochia distrust and in the municipalities of Edinet and Chisinau, IPN reports.
According to the Agency, the epidemiological analysis showed the patients most probably got infected while fishing or swimming in ponds infested with urine of animals, rats and other rodents that carry the Leptospira bacterium. The disease was diagnosed by serological detection of the bacterium that causes kidney and liver diseases and the hepatorenal syndrome. The patients suffered serious forms of the disease, but recovered. Some of the cases recorded the previous years caused death.
Leptospirosis is an infection caused by corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Leptospira. Signs and symptoms can range from none to mild such as headaches, muscle pains, and fevers; to severe with bleedinq from the lunqs or meninqitis. If the infection causes the person to turn yellow, have kidney failure and bleeding, it is then known as Weil’s disease. If it also causes bleeding into the lungs then it is known as severe pulmonary hemorrhage syndrome.
Specialists warn the early medical assistance in case of disease ensures effective recovery and avoidance of serious consequences.
