Doctors urge parents not to treat viral infections of children at home

Doctors warn the parents not to treat the viral infections of the children in domestic conditions, without consulting the family doctor, as some of the drugs can have bad side effects when used incorrectly and can be dangerous for the child’s health and life.

The warning was issued following an increasing number of viral infections after the weather grew colder. According to the National Emergency Medicine Center, about 30 children are daily diagnosed with viral infections.

Tatiana Raba, of the National Children’s Hospital “Emilian Cotaga”, has told IPN that the acute renal failure and toxic hepatitis are the most frequent reactions in cases of overdosing. They are treated during several weeks and in some cases can lead to death.

According to the doctors, the parents give the children pills taken by adults, such as aspirin and paracetamol. But they are very dangerous if administered mistakenly. The doctor prescribes treatment based on the age and weight of the child. The traditional treatments can also be dangerous.

Last year, a girl aged 4 died as a result of renal failure caused by an overdose of paracetamol. Another child aged three died in the hospital after the parents gave him non-prescribed drugs for fever for dive days.

About 300 children were admitted to the Mother and Child Center last year with drug poisoning. According to the Center’s statistics, most of the children were aged between 2 and 7.
