Doctor explains why large supplies of medicines do not exist in Moldova

The doctors who are today in the front line and struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic say the current situation should be a lesson for the Moldovan authorities. They note they haven’t been heard by the authorities for years and the replacement of the ministers and modification of policies in the medical sector created a vulnerable healthcare system, IPN reports.

“The health professionals weren’t heard during the past ten years. The ministers were replaced and health policies were changed, but none of them was implemented till the end. In such conditions, I consider we should manage what we have at the moment as there is no other solution. When this pandemic passes, with the learned lesson, we must make those changes so that the attitude to the medical caste, procurement and supervision of procurement is at a higher level. This situation should not become cyclic,” president of the Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology of Moldova Adrian Belyi, doctor of the Emergency Medicine Institute of Chisinau, stated in the talk show “Black Box” on TV8 channel.

The discussions were started following reports that there are not enough supplies of medicines and medical devices to struggle the COVID-19 infection in Moldova at present.

“The supplies are not large. The countries closed their borders and imposed bans. It is now hard to enlarge the supplies. Huge work is done by the Ministry of Health and by medical associations to solve the problem. The administrative resources and capacities to organize processes are very important. If the supplies are small, emphasis is placed on the limitation of consumption,” said Adrian Belyi.

Doctor Alexandru Botezatu, head of the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Department of the National Clinical Hospital, said the supplies for each year are created based on reports for the previous years. This way, Moldova had supplies to deal with situations comparable with those of the previous years, not with a global pandemic.

“We have a minimum package, but this is insufficient for a large flow,” stated Alexandru Botezatu.

Specialists say no healthcare system was prepared for such a pandemic and recommend the people to respect the recommendations of the authorities and doctors.
