Officers of the National Anticorruption Center arrested the head of the Inspection and Revision Division of Moldova’s Railways. The functionary is suspected of asking US$1,000 from a person for employing him, by transfer, as train conductor, IPN reports.
According to a communiqué of the Center, the operation to catch the functionary red-handed was carried out on the territory of the Chisinau Railway Terminal, in his office.
The man faces up to 10 years in jail or a fine of 60,000 lei for passive corruption. He will be banned from holding particular posts and performing particular activities for a period of up to five years.
In June, a former employee of Moldova’s Railways told a news conference at IPN that the company covers cases of smuggling in cigarettes, transportation of passengers without tickets and bribing of managers for obtaining posts of conductor.
