Distributors to be obliged to install smart meters in consumption places

The distributors of electrical energy, heat and natural gas will have to install smart meters on consumption places, as a bill that was given a first reading by Parliament provides, IPN reports.

Constantin Barosan, secretary of state of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, said the distributors will be obliged to install smart meters at end users when the technical and financial feasibility of these is proven.

The official noted that the measure will enable to reflect energy consumption in real time, to transmit data about consumption in real time and, respectively, to create preconditions for using differentiated charges depending on the time interval.

Under the bill, the role of the Energy Efficiency Agency in promoting the state policies on energy efficiency will be increased by enabling this to implement the subsidization mechanism for optimizing the consumption of energy and energy resources. The Agency will attract and manage financial resources for financing energy efficiency projects, such as “Voucher for Domestic Appliances”, “Green House” etc.

According to the bill, the public sector buildings that do not meet the minimum energy performance standards will be renovated annually starting with 2024.
