Dissenting opinions about prospects of Transnistria being joined to Russia

A part of the experts from Chisinau consider that Russia may recognize the independence of the Transnistrian region, while others believe that the Russian authorities will reject Tiraspol’s request to take over Transnistria. The issue was discussed simultaneously in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel and in the program “Politics” on TV7 channel, IPN reports.

Journalist Dumitru Chubashenko said the Russian authorities can accept Tiraspol’s request after the elections of this November, if the elections are won by the pro-European parties. “If the elections are won by the Communists, who will change the foreign policy course, Moscow will leave things as they are,” he stated.

Jurist Pavel Midrigan considers that the request to join Russia, made by the Transnistrian deputies, is nothing else but a game of the moment. After the Association Agreement with the EU is signed, the Russian authorities will calm down.

Ex-foreign minister Valeriu Ostalep said the Russian authorities will ignore the initiative of the Transnistrian deputies because Russia signed a bilateral agreement with Moldova by which it recognizes Moldova’s independence and integrity.

Journalistic Ion Terguta believes that the Transnistrian region found itself in an uncertain situation, which depends on the developments in Ukraine. “If Ukraine manages to liquidate the hotbed from behind, the economy of Transnistria will not resist and Russia will intervene,” he said.

Vice director of the Institute of Legal and Political Sciences of the Academy of Sciences Victor Juc considers that the Transnistrian authorities profit from the events taking place in Ukraine and causes new provocations in Moldova so as to bring their plans to an end.

The so-called Supreme Soviet of Tiraspol adopted a statement addressed to the central authorities of Russia, asking that they recognize the Transnistrian region as an independent state and consider its subsequent entry/incorporation into the composition of Russia. For its part, the Government of Moldova issued a statement, saying the given request is nothing else but direct defiance of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process and of Moldova’s territorial integrity. It called on the Russian partners to come with a prompt reaction, in full compliance with the norms and principles of international law.
