Disposable income nears 5,000 lei per person

Last year, the average disposable income per person was 4915.6 lei a month, 15.6% up from the previous year. Adjusted to inflation, the increase was 1.9%. Salary earnings represent the most important source of individual income, or 52.5% of the total, increasing by 1.8 points compared to 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics reported.

According to the Household Budget Research, in 2023 an important share in the average monthly disposable income of the population is still held by social benefits, which constituted 20.7%, or 0.4 points more than in 2022.

Self-employed activities accounted for 12.7%, income from individual agricultural activity represented 6.4%,  and 6.3% came from individual non-agricultural activity.

Remittances from outside the country remain a significant source for the household budget. In 2023 they represented 11.1% of total revenues, or 1 point less compared to 2022.

The income of the urban population was 2,299.8 lei (or 1.6 times) higher compared to the incomes of the rural population.

According to the NBS, consumption expenses of households are strongly marked by their size, especially in the case of large households. If in households with one person the average monthly expenses per person amounted to 5,051.4 lei, then for those consisting of 5 people and more these expenses are 1.6 times lower (3,116.8 lei). The same situation is observed in the case of households with children. A household with only one dependent child spends on average 1.4 times more per person than a household with 3 or more children.
