Dishonest taxpayers will face criminal punishments

Starting this year, individual taxpayers who failed to declare or declared less income in their annual tax returns which were due until April 2 will face criminal sentences that include fines, community service and even prison time, recalled Nicolae Platon, the head of the Tax Inspectorate, at a news conference. The failure to declare amounts larger than 50,000 lei will be punishable by 20,000 to 40,000 lei or 180 to 240 hours of community service, or up to 1 year in prison. If the amount due is larger that 100,000 lei, the punishment includes a fine ranging from 40,000 to 60,000 lei or a sentence of up to 3 years in prison. Other inaccuracies that involve smaller amounts also carry fines ranging from 200 to 1,000 lei. Similarly, the failure to file returns on time, that is, by April 2, is punishable by a 1,000 lei fine. Nicolae Platon noted that in 2011 taxpayers paid 617,000 lei in fines for various income tax-related violations. This year the deadline for submitting annual income tax returns was extended from March 31 to April 2, considering that March 31 fell on a Saturday.
