Discussions in Brussels on the competition legislation of the Republic of Moldova

The process of Moldova’s accession to the European Union involves adjusting economic policies and regulations to ensure fair competition between Moldovan businesses and those from the European community. Moldovan authorities are working on aligning national legislation with European standards, particularly in the field of competition, to ensure free and fair access for Moldovan products to the EU market and European products to the domestic market. Recently, representatives from several state institutions have been holding discussions in Brussels regarding Moldova's competition legislation, IPN reports.

"We are discussing how we will coexist with other economic agents from the European community once we become members of this Union. This is because both businesses from the European community will want to operate on the Moldovan market, and our producers will want to have free access to the European community markets," said Viorel Garaz, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization.

According to him, national practices are being presented, and an analysis is being made on how well they align with European ones. The aspects that still need work are being examined to ensure a free market for both economic agents from the European community and producers from Moldova.

"Fortunately, we are at a fairly advanced stage when it comes to competition policies. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to align our legislation with European standards. We are already operating in the European community market, and this opening is happening gradually. We understand the competition principles in certain markets – we do not distort the market, we do not offer prices that would distort a certain market," explains Viorel Garaz.

The State Secretary mentioned that sectors where further work is needed to improve competition conditions for economic agents are being analyzed and identified. "We are trying to stimulate local producers so that, when the market becomes free, our producers can compete with any producer on the European community market. We understand that some local producers may need a transitional period", he added.

In another vein, Viorel Garaz noted that, through pre-accession funds and the Growth Plan, Moldova will receive financial support from the European Union to improve infrastructure, facilitate product certification, and support access to European markets.
