Society should realize how a safer community can be built and how important discipline in road traffic is for reducing the number of accidents. The issue was discussed in public debates entitled “Safer community for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova”, IPN reports.
The head of the General Police Inspectorate Viorel Cernăuțeanu said that this year alone, they conducted over 3,400 informative activities centering on road safety. “Any safety in fact starts from education, from what we inspire and cultivate in the young generations. The result we all expect comes from there actually,” he stated.
Tatiana Zatyk, secretary of state of the Ministry of Health, said that drunk driving remains a problem as the lives of other traffic participants is endangered this way. “The use of alcohol is a decisive factor in road accident and also for a number of diseases. About 26% of all deaths are due namely to alcohol use. It is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, for cancers and infectious diseases,” stated the functionary.
Annually, about 2,000 personas are registered as chronic alcoholics. About 400 persons are each year hospitalized with alcohol-induced psychosis. “Regrettably, alcoholism among women is a problem as it develops faster and has a greater influence on the situation in society,” noted Tatiana Zatyk.
Those attending the discussions agreed that it is very important for society to realize the importance of diminishing alcohol use and of discipline in traffic for reducing the number of road accidents and the unfavorable impact on communities.
