Disabled persons and pensioners in Bacioi receive allowances

The persons with disabilities and pensioners living in Chisinau’s suburban town of Bacioi will receive allocations in a total amount of 90,000 lei on the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons. The money was collected from donations, informed the town’s mayor Ion Bivol. The mayor met on Sunday, December 2, with disabled persons and the elderly living in the town to hear their concerns. The meeting was also an occasion for the Association of Disabled Persons and Pensioners of Bacioi to elect its chairman and the executive board. With a population of nearly 11.000, Bacioi town is home to 1,470 disabled persons and pensioners. The International Day of Disabled Persons (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. For 2007, the theme of the observance is “Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities”. Citing World Bank studies estimating that social exclusion from the workplace costs the global economy up to nearly $2 trillion in estimated annual loss in GDP, the International Labour Organisation asserts that “providing decent work for people with disabilities makes social as well as economic sense”.
