Dirk Schuebel: I think we see the beginning of a political dialogue
“I think we see the beginning of a political dialogue, even if there is still a long way to go between the parties. I also do not think, in particular with regard to the EU, that the interests are diametrically opposed, because both, the governing Alliance for European Integration as well as the opposition Communist Party, are in favor of the course of European integration for the Republic of Moldova”, stated the head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova, Dirk Schuebel, in an interview with Info-Prim Neo.
Commenting on the statement that during 8 years of Communist rule there was virtually no political dialogue between the power and the opposition, and nothing indicates that it could happen under the current government, Dirk Schuebel said: “I do not think that the last 8 years of Communist government are decisive for having created this situation. Rather it’s the last more than seventy years of the former Soviet Union, until 1991, that are responsible for this lack in political dialogue”.
Dirk Schuebel said that since the very beginning of the existence of the Republic of Moldova, the EU-Moldova political relations have progressed to reach a more and more intensive level, “and I expressively include also the periods when the Communist Party was in government”. Certainly, when the current government took office in September last year, our relations have received a further push to become even more intensive.”
Answering a question about the accusations traded between the Moldovan politicians that the European funds are used for political and electoral purposes, Dirk Schuebel said he didn't know of any such cases. “I personally have not heard of such accusations during my four and a half months here in Moldova, but if such allegations exist, these might be related to local parties' politics. We have quite efficient auditing bodies, which audit the outcome of our projects very carefully and if irregularities happen, then certainly legal procedures would be underway”, said the head of the EU Delegation in the interview offered to Info-Prim Neo.
