Differing opinions about unionist movement in Moldova

Some experts think the unionist movement in Moldova was reinvigorated, while others consider there are no prospects for Moldova to join Romania. Contradictory statements on the issue were made in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

Historian Octavian Ticu considers the union with Romania is a chance for the Republic of Moldova. “The Republic Moldova showed incapacity to develop as a state. Inside the country, there are no viable solutions for further development. The crisis faced now by our country intensified the unionist trends. Currently, Romania is the only state on which the Republic of Moldova can count,” he stated.

A similar opinion was stated by Constantin Codreanu, the representative of the National Unity Bloc. “Our rulers are the last of the people of this county who do not want the union. The reasons are clear. They need key posts in the state administration, but are yet afraid of jail. Joining Moldova to the Romanian gas and power supply systems will be the first step prior to the union. Romania’s energy sector is independent as it does not depend on the Russian gas,” he said.

Historian Leonid Tabara expressed yet a differing opinion. “Romania and Moldova are two different countries, while the union is a utopian idea. Not the union with Romania, but the election of a normal government able to develop the country is Moldova’s chance,” he stated.
