Differing opinions about union statements adopted at local level

The adoption by local elected officials of statements on Moldova’s union with Romania forms part of the election campaign and has a coordinated character, said participants in the talk show “Politics” produced by TV8 channel. Other participants said the given statements show the state of spirit in society, IPN reports.

Vladislav Kulminski, executive director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives, said the statements on the union with Romania that were adopted recently by a number of local councils form part of the election campaign prior to this year’s parliamentary elections. Furthermore, this is a coordinated action.

According to him, the process was initiated by the Democratic Party together with the Party of Socialists. “I think this precedent is dangerous for the Republic of Moldova as Pandora’s box could be opened before the election campaign. Our state is weak and feeble. Why should we shatter it further? In order to win the elections only?” asked Vladislav Kulminski, noting that the citizens this way will vote again according to the geopolitical criterion.

Deputy head of the National Unity Party Cornel Pintea said the action of the local elected officials wasn’t planned as some say, but shows the mood in the country. “This is not a political statement. It is a cry of the heart,” he stated. According to him, Romania and Moldova are the only states that live by the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact and thus one nation lives in two different countries. This act has nothing to do with the election campaign.

Socialist MP Bogdan Tirdea said that President Igor Dodon will convoke the Supreme Security Council to discuss the issue. MP Grigore Novac requested the Security and Intelligence Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office to give a legal appraisal to these events. “Starting with tomorrow, there will appear such statements concerning the protection of Moldova’s sovereignty and independence adopted by other local councils and mayor’s offices,” stated Bogdan Tirdea.

So far, 12 villages in Moldova signed a symbolic document on the union with Romania.
