Differing opinions about draft law on prosecution service

The opposition and civil society harshly criticize the 32 amendments to the draft law on the prosecution service that were approved in a recent meeting of the Parliament’s legal commission, while MPs of the majority alliance say that these meet the Constitution and the European norms. The contradictory opinions were stated in the talk show “Politics” on TV7 channel.

Anatolie Zagorodnyi, MP of the Social-Democratic Platform, said that these amendments will improve the work of prosecutors and will ensure their independence. “I see no problem in these amendments. The bill on the prosecution service had gathered dust for a period and now we returned to it as time has come to improve it. We examined these changes so as not to lose time in Parliament when the bill is put to the vote. I hope that this document will be passed in the final reading by Parliament on Thursday,” he stated.

The head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Tudor Deliu said the hurry in which the parliamentary coalition amended this bill and intends to adopt it in the final reading is suspicious. “We voted for the draft law on the prosecution service in the first reading. What happened in the meeting of the legal commission is suspicious. We do not even know the author of these amendments. The deadline for introducing amendments was expired and the Parliament’s regulations were thus violated,” he said.

Vlad Gribincea, head of the working group for drafting the bill on the prosecution service, also questions some of the amendments. “We weren’t at least invited to the commission’s meeting. We found out about these amendments accidentally. There were introduced a number of cosmetic amendments, some of which were earlier rejected,” he said.
