Priests consider the construction of a supplementary building behind the Metropolitan Cathedral “God’s Birth” in central Chisinau is absolutely necessary, while civic activists believe the existing sanitary block can be repaired and there is no need to erect a new building. Differing opinions on the issue were stated in the talk show “Politics” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.
Bishop Manole Brihunet, head of the Architecture and Church Painting Department of the Moldovan Metropolitan Church, said the Metropolitan Cathedral will ultimately have an annex for the personnel, including proper sanitary facilities. The idea of the construction has been promoted in accordance with the law.
Sergiu Borozan, chief architect of Chisinau municipality, said this parochial house is needed from technological viewpoint. “The Municipal Council endorsed first the design conception of the parochial house. The construction project hasn’t been yet approved,” he stated.
Civic activist Victor Bunescu said the Chisinau Municipal Council’s decision is a kind of “carte blanche” for the Metropolitan Church. It has not legal power and describes absolutely nothing. The land located behind the Metropolitan Cathedral belongs to the municipality, but the building that is situated on this land is owned by two private individuals. That building was assessed at 363,000 lei and the owners would not give it free. Society could yet provide assistance in repairing the current sanitary block and no new building would be thus needed.
Chisinau councilor of “Our Party” Veaceslav Bulat said the Chisinau Council didn’t give its consent to building a block yet and the decision approved by it authorizes no construction. There are a series of procedures that should be followed. He noted he will vote for the construction of a parochial house only after he examines a substantiation study and the appraisals of the competent bodies.
The Chisinau Municipal Council on October 31 approved the design conception of the future supplementary building intended for church employees that will be built behind the Metropolitan Cathedral “God’s Birth” in central Chisinau. The building will be about 700 square meters in area and six meters in height.
