The main thing the diaspora wants is for the situation to improve for those from home. “Their biggest concern is their parents, relatives, sometimes the children who remained at home and their biggest expectations are related to the domestic situation, such as the internal reforms, fight against corruption, rise in pensions and salaries,” President-elect Maia Sandu stated when being asked what she will do for the Moldovans abroad, who voted for her in a large number in the presidential elections.
IPN quoted Maia Sandu as saying in a press conference that many of the Moldovans who left the country have plans related to the Republic of Moldova and want to enjoy economic opportunities at home. They want to know that enterprises will be opened here and workplaces will be created here. The living conditions, reforms in health and education and investments in infrastructure are also important.
The specific needs related to their presence abroad are fewer in number, like the recognition of driver’s licenses and the discussions on the issue with a number of countries will be continued so as to reach mutual license recognition agreements. The improvement of the consular services by introducing electronic services for Moldovans abroad is another important issue as is the simplification of voting for the diaspora by electronic voting or postal voting.
Maia Sandu noted that to persuade the people to return home, internal reforms should be done and a functional state with solid institutions should be built to ensure the fight against corruption and to provide high-quality services. This should be done for Moldova to become attractive and for the Moldovans who left to return home.
