Diaspora brings victory to Basescu

78.86% of the Romanians living abroad voted in favor of Traian Basescu, bringing him victory in the presidential elections. 94.6% of the voters in Moldova supported Traian Basescu, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the morning, Basescu's victory was uncertain, but after the votes cast at the 294 polling places set up abroad and the votes cast inside Romania were counted the score was 50.33% - 49.66% in the current President's favor. The Central Election Office announced that the turnout of voters was 58.02%. Traian Basescu's opponent Mircea Geoana has made no comment on the results yet. His party, the PSD, refuses to sign the electoral reports, saying the elections had been rigged. The leader of the Social-Democratic MPs Viorel Hrebenciuc said they would probably challenge the election outcome. The president of honor of the PSD Ion Iliescu said the sudden change of the situation was suspicious and that the party will make a decision at about 17.00. The leaders of the PSD are also to decide whether to challenge the results all over the country or only in certain counties like Arges, Olt and Constanta. Liviu Dragnea, secretary general of the PSD, also said that the elections had been fixed. “The reports were modified by the heads of the polling places,” he said. The PSD is very dissatisfied with the voting results in Moldova, where they suspect large-scale electoral tourism. More than 12,000 people voted at the 13 polling stations opened in Moldova. The announced results will become final after the Constitutional Court of Romania validates them.
