Dialogue is key element for integrating minorities and building state

In a polarized society where there is no unity, the major problems of the communities cannot be solved. The people living in Moldova – Russians, Ukrainians, Bulgarians, etc. – are not to blame for the country’s tragic past. Each of these makes effort to assert oneself. The problem of minorities can be solved by dialogue, not through school or by similar measures, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola stated in the roundtable meeting “Minorities and creation of an inclusive society: Moldova, Ukraine and international practice”. The event was organized by the Institute for European Politics and Reforms in Chisinau.

The Institute’s executive director Martin Sieg underlined the importance of promoting an inclusive society in Moldova, where everyone will feel part of society. “It is very important to address the relationship between the minorities as this would move things into a positive direction. The dialogue is the main element in reaching consensus on any problem. The necessity of avoiding extremes is another element that can have negative effects and can lead to new conflicts,” he stated.

Germany’s Ambassador to Moldova Ulrike Knotz said the political parties should use the ethnic minorities to achieve electoral goals. “The identity conflicts become unsettled conflicts. The result is a poor one and with big problems in doing reforms. The Embassy of Germany implemented a number of projects in the social sphere and they all revealed one thing – the young people perceive ethnic diversity not as a problem, but as a subject of pride. It’s time for the political class to follow the example of the young people. To my mind, the ethnic and linguistic diversity of Moldovan society is in reality a big and precious resource of the country. A careful c approach to it is needed,” said the diplomat.

The Governor of Gagauzia Irina Vlah said the Moldovan authorities should maintain a constructive dialogue with all the minorities and should consult each of them in order to avoid conflicts. The representatives of the Territorial Autonomous Unit attending the event said Gagauzia is a component part of Moldova and, despite particular divergences, the experience with this minority can be considered positive.
