“This could be a beginning of discussion. We should have a powerful party on the right segment,” the president of honor of the Democratic Party (PDM) Dumitru Diacov stated for IPN when asked to comment on the statement that the Party of Communists (PCRM) and the PDM could merge in case of presidential elections and if early legislative elections are held, made by the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin.
“There are yet no serious discussions on the issue. I said long ago that the political forces in Moldova need to join. During many years, I have spoken about the need to have a united left and I refer not only to the Democratic Party and the Party of Communists. There are also other parties that promote the European left. A merging process takes time and is rather difficult. That’s why we theoretically approve of the union of the political forces and the creation of a healthy group,” stated Dumitru Diacov.
“In the current circumstances, the formation of a bloc is more probable. I understood that Mister Voronin spoke in light of possible early elections. In case of early elections, a merger is not possible. That’s why we must speak about the union of the political forces so that we have a healthy and united left, based on clear European principles and the political views about Moldova’s course are a problem here.”
In a TV program, Vladimir Voronin said that in case of presidential elections and if early elections are held, the PCRM could merge with the PDM. He noted he would accept the post of head of state on particular conditions and is ready to form a coalition in Parliament with parties of the center left.
