The Gagauz parliament's decision to hold a referendum on the autonomy's “external self-determination” has an electoral implication, given the gubernatorial election in the autonomy later this year, thinks Igor Corman, the speaker of the Moldovan Parliament.
Corman said at a press briefing today that there are political forces in Chisinau which endorse the developments in Gagauzia. “The Communist lawmakers support these events. It seems that after the failure of the velvet revolution that was promised by the Communists, they decided to employ schemes of this kind”.
Corman went on to state that the authorities in Comrat exceeded their powers when deciding on the referendum. Now Chisinau maintains a permanent dialog with the authorities in the south and Igor Corman thinks it should be continued until the situation is peacefully overcome.
The Gagauz People's Assembly decided at the end of last year to hold a referendum on the autonomy's right to “external self-determination”. Despite the decision being invalidated by the Comrat Court on January 3, the Gagauz authorities are determined to carry on and conduct it as planned on February 2.
