Development of women’s potential leads to economic growth, U.S. Ambassador
The investments in education and the development of the women’s potential are efficient. Researches showed that the increase in the women’s involvement in all the processes leads to economic growth and the development of society, U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau William H. Moser said in the opening of an international conference themed “Gender Equality for a Sustainable Society”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The ambassador said that the investments in the girls’ education contribute to higher salaries for them in the future and to the progress of the entire society as the female potential is very important on the whole.
Attending the opening of the conference, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that the Government made a number of commitments in order to fully ensure gender equality in Moldova, agreeing a number of actions that are to be taken. “I’m glad that the Moldovan women are now more present in the central and local public administrations,” he said.
Swedish Ambassador to Moldova Ingrid Tersman said the idea of organizing this conference appeared a year ago and was suggested by the business community. “The goal of the event is to address the challenges faced by women at social and economic levels. Everybody knows them. We aim to find solutions and eliminate the stereotypes so as to engage the women in decision making in politics, business and other areas to a greater extent,” she stated.
UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Nicola Harington-Buhay underlined the role played by education in removing the barriers to gender equality. She said that Moldova’s legislation in this field is enviable, but one of the country’s problems is the insufficient communication.
Gas Natural Fenosa CEO Silvia Radu said that gender inequality is not the women’s problem only as it is a problem of the whole society and the fact that an official like the premier points to this problem shows that one of the goals of this conference was achieved.
The event was organized with support from East Europe Foundation from the money provided by Gas Natural Fenosa Moldova and the Government of Sweden through the agency of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
