As of 2019, those who possess a driver’s license that does not have a period of validity will be obliged to renew it. These will be issued with licenses for a ten-year period, as it has been done since 2008. The drivers who turned 65 will be an exception. The driver’s license to them will be issued for a five-year period and this could be extended after a special medical examination. Such provisions are contained in a bill to modify the conditions for issuing driver’s licenses, IPN reports.
If the period of validity of the driver’s license expires, the renewal procedure is simpler and does not involve the taking of an exam for obtaining a license. Only a medical examination is required.
In an answer to an inquiry by IPN, the Public Service Agency says the practice of delimiting the period of validity of driver’s licenses depending on the driver’s age is used in the EU member states. Thus, depending on country and age, the periodicity of the renewal procedures varies: after 40 years (Hungary) – each five years, after 50 years (Italy, Portugal) – each five years, etc.
The bill is to be appraised. It was submitted to the Ministry of Justice, which has 30 days to pronounce on it. Afterward, all the objections and proposals will be taken into consideration.
