The local authorities established a number of preliminary causes of the collapse of the stairs of a bank branch located on Miron Costin St in Chisinau. Deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu said inspections at a number of building sites in Chisinau, located near other buildings, will be launched on June 14 so as to avoid other cases of the kind, IPN reports.
In the June 13 meeting of officials of Chisinau services and divisions, Nistor Grozavu said the stairs caved in because the owners of the plots on which the building is erected used metallic poles to fortify the dug walls. Initially, these planned to use reinforced concrete poles for the purpose, but later chose metallic poles so as to save time and money.
The deputy mayor explained that large quantities of water accumulated near the poles as a result of the heavy rain and the walls of the foundation pit didn’t resist. Inspections at a number of local building sites will start tomorrow.
For his part, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca instructed the General Davison of Architecture, Urbanism and Land Relations not to accept design documentation based on the same solutions concerning foundation pits as those used on the building constructed at 9 Miron Costin St.
Last week, a wall caved in on a building site situated on Miron Costin St. As a result, the sidewalk and the stairs of a commercial bank were damaged. A criminal case was started over execution of works of a poor quality.
