The Republic of Moldova should have relations of friendship will all the neighbors, but this should not affect the European integration course, U.S. Ambassador Dereck J. Hogan stated in the program “In Depth” on ProTV Chisinau channel. The diplomat noted the achievement of these two objectives simultaneously is possible. In this connection, he approved of the fact that the Party of Socialists, which is ruling together with the Bloc ACUM, is for establishing closer relations with the United States and supports Moldova’s integration into the European Union. According to him, this is something that the U.S. can accept and is a position with which the U.S. can work as long as this majority functions, IPN reports.
“We support the European integration aspirations of the Republic of Moldova. We have always been like an advocate in favor of continuing the orientation to the West of the Republic of Moldova. We have had a relationship with Moldova since the country declared its independence,” stated Dereck J. Hogan.
He noted that it was a matter of principle for the U.S. for the parliamentary elections of this February to be held much better than the local mayoral elections held in Chisinau last year. These elections were to be of a higher quality and in accordance with all the international norms.
The ambassador said the U.S. pleaded for a transparent process of forming the new Government in Moldova. “When we saw the Constitutional Court decisions concerning the formation of this Government by the Bloc ACUM and the Party of Socialists, two entities that, being elected legitimately, wanted to combine forces, we told not only those from the Democratic Party, but all the parties that the U.S. considered those decisions were politicized and we were ready to work with the new Government and Parliament,” stated the diplomat.
Dereck J. Hogan noted they transmitted the same message to the leader of the Democratic Party Vladimir Plahotniuc before this left the country.
“The main element of our position, both in the statement of the start of June and in that issued on June 14, was the same: we encourage a political dialogue that we consider important for the parties to agree a method for ensuring this transition,” he said.
