Deputy mayor of Balti placed under house arrest. Lawyer: insufficient evidence

The Deputy Mayor of Balti, Tatiana Dubitkaia, who was detained in a corruption case, has been placed under house arrest. The decision was made on Monday, February 10, after the court accepted the lawyer’s appeal, citing a lack of sufficient evidence, IPN reports.

Contacted by IPN, Tatiana Dubitkaia’s lawyer, Gheorghe Ionas, confirmed that she was placed under house arrest as of yesterday. According to the lawyer, the court changed the detention measure at the request of the defense, as there was not enough evidence to prove that Dubitkaia had committed or participated in acts of large-scale corruption.

Initially, on January 29, the Chisinau Court, Ciocana branch, had ordered 30 days of preventive detention at the prosecutors’ request. At the time, prosecutors argued that Tatiana Dubitkaia could influence witnesses or commit other offenses if released.

The Deputy Mayor is under investigation for bribery and influence peddling. According to the National Anticorruption Center, she allegedly accepted bribes of over 200,000 euros from municipal officials and directors of subordinate institutions in exchange for illegal favors.

The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the case.
