Depositors born before 1954 may receive indexed savings
The depositors of the Moldovan Savings Bank (Banca de Economii) born before 1954 who submitted requests for indexation until 1 March 2008 may withdraw their first-stage indexed savings at any location of the bank starting March 12, Info-Prim Neo reports.
At the same time, the Government’s Savings Indexation Commission informs the citizens that the deadline for accepting indexation requests from depositors born before 1954, which would enable them to receive indexed amounts this year, has been extended until 1 May 2008. Requests for indexation may be submitted at any outlet of the Savings Bank.
At the first stage of the indexation, depositors get 1000 lei each at a ratio of 1 leu: 1 soviet ruble. The remaining sum on the deposit accounts will be indexed at a ratio of 1: 2.5, but only after all the depositors that held accounts in Sberbank before 1992 have received the first indexed thousand rubles.
After the Moldovan leu was introduced on 29 November 1993 and the prices were liberalized, the population’s savings decreased in value by over 1,000 times.
