Department of Penitentiary Institutions considers PGO’s statements abusive

The Department of Penitentiary Institutions considers that the statements by the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) that the penitentiary administration hushed up the illegalities committed at the prison when a detainee was beaten to death are abusive. The reaction comes after prosecutors gave a news conference and informed that four doctors of Penitentiary No. 16 will be tried for negligence because they didn’t provide medical assurance to a prisoner who was physically ill-treated by members of the criminal group “Makena”. They said that this case involves officials of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions, IPN reports.

“The penitentiary’s employees performed the required preliminary documentation procedures and informed the competent bodies,” the Department says in a communiqué. According to it, an altercation between three detainees at Penitentiary No. 16 last February resulted in the death of one of them after he was hit with a hard wooden object. The penitentiary’s administration held two internal inquiries. Seven employees received reprimands and severe reprimands. The employee who was directly responsible for the sector where the incident happened was discharged from the penitentiary system.

The materials accumulated within the internal inquiries were sent to the prosecution bodies last February. There was established no connection between the incident and the criminal organization “Makena”.
