Department for Emergencies assesses Jumbo blast damage
As a result of the explosion that occurred at the shopping centre Jumbo on February 14, some 20 square metres of sheet glass, 100 metres of ceiling and other material goods were damaged. The supporting structure of the building was not affected, the Department for Emergencies said in a press release sent to Info-Prim Neo for further dissemination.
Although the damage in money term hasn’t been tallied yet, the Department said several facilities on the fourth storey of the mall sustained damages.
According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the source of the blast was an LPG cylinder kept and used in the kitchen of a restaurant on the fourth storey in breach of fire safety rules and instructions from fire authorities.
Twelve persons were wounded, of whom eleven were taken to the hospital, including to persons who suffered burns covering 35-45% of their bodies.
The Prosecutor’s Office has initiated criminal proceedings on charges of reckless ignorance of fire safety regulations. The criminal proceedings are to establish the causes and the circumstances of the blast, as well as the guilty persons. Prosecutors will also have to probe whether the administration of the shopping mall and the fire authorities deserve a part of the blame for the accident.
