They have spoken a lot about sustainable development in Moldova in the last 20 years, but not much was done to achieve this goal. In the conference “Green Sustainable Development in the Republic of Moldova”, organized by the Government in partnership with UNDP and the executive of Denmark, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said it’s not right that only the rich countries afford sustainable development through the green economy. This objective does not depend on the political color and can be achieved in Moldova too.

“The conception of the green economy, applied in more towns and villages all over the world, can ensure the necessary balance between the ecological and economic objectives. The report “Towards a Green Economy: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication”, produced by the United Nations Environment Program in 2011, shows that the ‘greening’ of economy does not reduce the level of welfare and does not compromise the process of creating jobs,” stated Iurie Leanca.

Attending the event, the Foreign Minister of Denmark Martin Lidegaard said the Danish authorities will assist Moldova in developing the green economy. The development of such an economy is a necessity given that the global economy is expected to become twice larger in the next 20 years and, evidently, a part of this growth will take place in Moldova.

The Danish official called on the Government of Moldova to create a favorable legal framework for the private sector, which would bring foreign investment for the sustainable development of the country.

In the conference, Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov and Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Salaru signed a joint declaration of intent, committing themselves to coordinating the efforts of the institutions they manage so as to ensure the sustainable and environmentally-friendly development.
