Democratic Party is worried about demographic situation in Moldova

“The Moldovan population decreases with some 10,000 people every year and this is a reason why there cannot be economic growth,” said Elena Burca, a candidate on the Democratic Party (PD)'s list for the parliament. At a news conference she gave on Monday with a PD member, Valentina Stratan, Elena Burca criticized the way in which the Communist authorities implemented the social policies, Info-Prim Neo reports. Elena Burca has expressed her concern that the Moldovan authorities carried out no demographic forecasts for the last 15 years, in order to better coordinate the state's social policies. They are said to have also ignored the proposals of non-governmental organizations. MP Valentina Stratan has said that, for the last couple of years, by the end of the financial year, the Moldovan parliament decreases the amount provided for assisting families from the state social insurances budget. That is because fewer and fewer Moldovans decide to give birth to children. Moreover, there are 465 divorces registered in 1,000 marriages. In order to improve the demographic situation in Moldova, the Democratic Party proposes, in addition to a better management of grants and loans from foreign donors, to build social dwellings for young families, etc.
