Democratic Forum of Romanians urges local authorities to follow example of Ungheni authorities and remove barbed fences at border with Romania

The Democratic Forum of Romanians from Moldova (FDRM) call on the local councils of Moldova to follow the example of the Ungheni District Council, which decided to provide the people with free access to the areas adjoining the River Prut by removing the barbed fences set up near the border with Romania. The fact that the councilors of the Democratic parties and a Communist councilman voted in favour of the given decision shows that the Moldovan citizens long to become part of the European Union, says the FDRM appeal launched on October 26. According to FDRM, the removal of the barbed fences in the area of the Prut would stop the Communists from violating the human rights in Moldova by stimulating the migration of the working population, postponing the democratic and economic reforms, destroying the infrastructure, deteriorating the education and healthcare systems and encouraging the fight between the classes. Agreed with the epochal decision of the Saint Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church of October 24, regarding the rehabilitation of the Bessarabian bishoprics of Balti, Dubasari and Cantemir, the decision of the Ungheni District Council can constitute a turning point in the integration of Bessarabia into the European Union and NATO, the FDRM Board says. The Ungheni District Council on October 25 decided to allow the people to have free access to the territories adjacent to the river Prut by removing the barbed fences fixed along the border zone of Ungheni district. The initiative was put forward by the 21 councillors that are part of the coalition of Democratic parties “Initiative 2007” formed in the Ungheni District Council.
