Defense Ministry says format of state commission for implementing Strategic Defense Review should be changed

The Ministry of Defense highlights the necessity of reviewing the format of the state commission for the implementation of the Strategic Defense Review (SDR), engaging the civil society in the discussions on the draft Military Strategy and modifying the structure of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff. The conclusions were formulated after a working meeting at the Ministry by Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Ene, who is a consultant to the Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the institution. According to Ivan Ene, though the implementation of the Strategic Defense Review produced good results, this process was suspended as the results stated in the preliminary SDR report on the existent capacities were to be re-validated and the fulfillment terms were to be reviewed. By an order of the Ministry of Defense, a working group was created at the start of the year to devise the National Military Strategy. The Strategy and the report on the military dangers were drafted, while the preliminary reports on the dangers existing in the National Army were submitted to the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces. The implementation of the SDR started when the state commission was set up in October 2007. The commission included four groups of experts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration was in charge of strategic matters, the General Staff of the National Army – of the defense system, the Ministry of Defense – of defense resources, while the Defense Policy and Planning Division of the Ministry of Defense – of defense management.
