Head of Parliament Andrian Candu, in the event held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Sovereignty, said that this was an act of major civic resposibility, for the destinies of the country and the people, on the part of the members of the first democratic Parliament. “This was the first important step on the path covered by our country towards independence and recognition on the international arena,” said the official, quoted by IPN.
According to the Speaker, the 25 years of sovereignty weren’t an easy period for Moldova because the building of a state implies a lot of effort. “The European integration is our major objective. To achieve it, we must implement a broad program of political, economic, institutional and legal reforms. Now that we enter a new stage, we must do our utmost to achieve the ideals of sovereignty and independence of Moldova and to do everything possible for our country to enter the family of the peoples of civilized Europe,” stated Andrian Candu.
The official offered by a special issue of postage stamps to the members of the first Parliament as a gift.
Adopted on June 2, 1990, the Declaration of Sovereignty laid at the basis of the Declaration of Independence and served as a benchmark for drafting the first Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. The Declaration of Sovereignty provides that the internal laws have supremacy over the laws of the ex-Soviet Union of which it formed part. It institutes national citizenship and lays down the right to establish diplomatic relations with all the countries of the world.
