The Parliament decision of October 11 that envisions the launch of the process of amending the Constitution so that it allows for the direct election of judges by the people was published in the October 26 issue of the Official Gazette. The bill to amend the Constitution is to be presented to Parliament during 30 days of the adoption of the decision, IPN reports.
The Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities was empowered to draft the bill together with the Ministry of Justice. The commission can engage specialists of the Parliament’s Secretariat, the State Chancellery, the Ministry of Justice and the Superior Council of Magistracy and other specialists and independent experts from Moldova and other countries to consult them in the process of formulating the law.
The opposition parliamentary groups criticized the initiative, describing it as populist.
