Decision on underground galleries found on building site in Cahul

The National Council of Historical Monuments decided to move slightly the foundation of the future National Musical-Dramatic Theater “B.P. Hasdeu” in Cahul so as to protect one of the underground galleries discovered in the perimeter. The Council members met to examine at the scene the problems related to the construction of the theater that appeared in connection with the discovery of underground galleries near the foundation pit, IPN reports.

The National Council of Historical Monuments, which consists of specialists in architecture, conservation and restoration of the built cultural heritage, decided to transfer the foundation of the future theater by 2-3 meters so as to protect one of the galleries discovered there. Gallery No. 1 will be exhaustively examined and will be then dismantled, while the obtained materials/ stones will be used to restore Gallery No. 2, which will be later opened to the public.

The project to erect the building of the Cahul Theater “B.P.Hasdeu” is implemented following a memorandum signed by Moldova and Romania and with a grant of €800,000 provided by the Government of Romania. The works are to be completed this year.

The underground galleries date from the 19th century. During the last 20 years, traces of such galleries were reported by residents of Cahul in a number of sectors of the town.
