December 25 not declared permanent holiday
The Liberal-Democratic and Democratic factions and the Communist MPs voted against the Liberals’ proposal to make December 25, when it is celebrated Christmas according to the new calendar, a permanent holiday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Liberal Party’s chairman Mihai Ghimpu said there are villages in Moldova that celebrate Christmas according to the new calendar and they should be allowed to rest on this day.
“The serious and important things are not done this way. We must meet with representatives of civil society and the church and discuss the issue,” said the head of the Democratic faction Dumitru Diacov. He also said that the Democratic Party is not against making December 25 a holiday, but the subject must be discussed more thoroughly.
The head of the Liberal-Democratic faction Valeriu Strelet said that December 25 this year was declared a nonworking day by Government Decision. “Discussions should be held next year with the people so that we reach a consensus. Furthermore, I think proposing this bill three days before Christmas is an attempt to gain advantages. We must abandon such practices,” he stated.
Communist MP Anatolii Zagorodnyi said that by this bill the Liberal Party is trying to divide society. “The people know how to celebrate without laws. We do not have the moral right to oblige society to celebrate by law,” he said.
The Moldovans observe Christmas according to the new calendar on December 25 and according to the old calendar on January 7.
