Decade-long influence-peddling case involving appointment of deputy minister goes to court

A suspect will stand trial on accusations of soliciting money to make Alexei Vîrlan a deputy minister back in 2010, the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a press release.

According to prosecutors, the suspect solicited 150,000 euros from Vîrlan claiming he could convince acquaintances in the Democratic Party leadership to appoint him as deputy minister of transport.

The suspect allegedly received a first installment of 50,000 euros, after which he was held.

It’s believed the suspect acted with an accomplice who has been declared a fugitive from justice.
